The unluckiest boy in Canterbury tennis at present is Graeme Liddell, who was to have captioned a secondary schools’ side on a tour of New South Wales in the next two weeks.
Liddell broke a wrist while playing in an inter-house rugby match at Timaru Boys’ High School, and is out of the tour.
Geoff Hayes of Shirley Boys’ High School, will take over as captain of the 15 strong team, and the girls’ captain will be Carolyn Oakley, of Avonside Girls’ High School.
In Sydney the team will link with six teenage players form Auckland and enter the New South Wales age and school championships, which start at the White City courts next Tuesday. On May 19 and 20 the tourists will play two “tests” against combined new South Wales high schools at Gosport and White City.
The Canterbury players have been practising earnestly on the Wilding Park hard courts in recent weeks, and the manager (Mr M. Marshall) believes the side will give a good account of itself, although the opposition will be strong.
