The top four seeds cruised through to predictable wins in the semi-finals of the national squash championships at Palmerston North yesterday.
Results were probably as predictable as Stephen Cunningham (Geyser City) and Susan Devoy (Henderson) winning this afternoon’s finals in the Railfreight Systems-sponsored tournament.
However, the No. 2 seed, Glen Wilson (Mitchell Park) showed enough form and resolve in beating the surprise semi-finalist, Rod Hayes (Christchurch), last evening to suggest he may shake the monopoly Cunningham has had over him.
In the end, however, the rising star of New Zealand squash had too much control in the air, killing many rallies with volleys off both wings to dispose of Hayes 9-4, 9-2, 9-3.
Cunningham had no such bother removing Titirangi’s No, 3 seed, Michael McSherry, winning 9-1, 9-0, 9-6 in little more than 20 minutes.
Eden-Epsom’s Charmain Hayes was pleased to even make the semi-finals after her upset over Cheryl Te Kani (Geyser City) on Monday and bowed out in quick time to the world champion, Susan Devoy, 9-1, 9-1, 9-1.
Joanne Williams, the No. 2 women’s seed, will meet Devoy in this afternoon’s final.
