Joanne Milne (Sumner) appears set to win her third Canterbury Open title in succession. Last year she beat Jillian Oakley (Mitchell Park) easily in the final.
This year, they appear certain to clash in the semi-finals. Oakley is third seed, as Wellington’s top player Linda McLure (Maidstone) has been given second spot.
McLure will be an interesting newcomer for Canterbury enthusiasts. She is a multi talented sportswoman and took up squash seriously only two years ago. In that short time she has rocketed up to sixth in the national rankings.
She hits the ball with great power and it will be interesting to see whther she has fully added a drop to her repertoire of shots.
Carolyn Oakley (Sumner) is fourth seed. However, Susan Wasley (Burnside), seeded in the 5 to 8 group, is drawn to meet Oakley in the quarter finals and a continuation of her excellent form at the Linwood Open last weekend could see an upset in the making.
With Canterbury selection in mind the performances of Wasley, Oakley, Kate Carpinter (Sumner) and Justine Marriott will be watched with interest. The only contender who seems to be missing is Adele Ellery (Greymouth).
