The members of the Canterbury secondary schools tennis team were “terribly disappointed” at not being able to leave on schedule for their New South Wales tour this week the manager (Mr. M. Marshall) said yesterday.
The players, who were due to leave Christchurch last Saturday, are among the many people affected by the Australian air traffic controllers’ strike.
But Mr Marshall said the team was still determined to make the flight across the Tasman, provided the strike did not extend into next week. The players had worked hard in association with tennis enthusiasts to raise money for the trip and they were keen to undertake a limited visit.
The team will miss the stage age and schools championships, but will still be in time for the “tests” against N.S.W. combined high schools if flights resume next week.
Tennis – France, which made sure of beating Poland in the Davis Cup European zone A quarter-final, completed a 5-0 victory by taking both the reverse matched in Warsaw. In Buchanrest, Romania advanced by beating Czechoslovakia, 3-1.
