Squash win to Hayes

/ Christchurch Closed Men’s A Grade tournament - 1975 - 76 / Rod Hayes, Ros Stanton, Merle Holland, Viv Hargreaves, Lyn Sparks, Graeme Foulds, Jill Bruce

Canterbury promising junior squash player Rod Hayes will play High School Old Boys’ Viv Hargreaves in the final of the Christchurch Closed Men’s A Grade tournament tomorrow. For the 17-year-old Hayes, third seed in the tournament it will be his youth against Hargreaves, with his extensive tournament and representative experience.Hayes won through to the finals by beating Wigram’s Lyn Sparks in four games today. Hayes won the first game 9-5 and quickly raced away to a 7-0 lead in the second. But he lost concentration and let the har driving Sparks take control. Sparks fought back to 7-all and them took the game 9-7. In the third game Hayes settled down to play some brilliant squash to win 9-0. Although he was down 3-5 Hayes came back strongly in the fourth game and winning the serve went away to a 8-5 lead. Sparks held one match point before Hayes won the final game and the match 9-5.Hargreaves the No.1 seed met Graeme Foulds in the other semi-final and in the first game it looked as though theBurnside player was going to have another upset win. Foulds went to an 8-5 lead before Hargreaves settled down. Then Hargreaves put on the pressure to win the game 10-8. Hargreaves never looked like being headed and won the next two games 9-6, 9-0. The two top seeds in the women’s A grade. Ros Stanton (HSOB) and Kathy Graham (Burnside) will play in the final. Miss Stanton, the top seed scored a good 9-2,9-2,9-0 win over Jill Bruce (Suburbs). Mrs Graham met Merle Holland (Summer)and the Burnside No.1 won the first two games 9-5,9-6.However, in the third Mrs Holland with some fine cross court lobs and drives to the back corners won 9-7.In the fourth game Mrs Graham took control to win 9-6.
