The under 17’s boys’ title at the Canterbury junior squash rackets championships went to R. Hayes (Christchurch), who beat R. Espie (Nelson) 9-6,9-7,9-5, in a fast moving final of good-class squash. With 23 entries in this grade, it became the blue riband event of the tournament, and the general standard of play in it gives great promise for the future. Because of the small number of entires in the girls events, they were grouped into one grade, and this was convincingly won by the top Canterbury junior P. Monk (Christchurch)who beat the 13 year old J.Milne (Sumner) in the final. The youngest winner was the 10 year old S Davenport (burnside) in the under 13 boys’ event. He made up for his lack of strength on the drive with well played drop shots and angles. N. Mayson (Sumner), unseeded in the boys under 15, provided a sound display of controlled squash in his final with J. McGillivray (Christchurch). McGillivray showed fine touch in the second and third games which he won, but Mason’s length play was too consistent in the final two games. Played on a round-robin basis as there were only five entries, the boys under 19 was won by P. Salt (Christchurch), who won his four matches without losing a game.
