Brilliant squash gave Rod Hayes (Christchurch) a surprise win in the Edmonds Tang pre-season open invitation tournament at the Christchurch club yesterday.
Hayes had a great win over the national representative Tony Naughton (Wellington), who beat Hayes three times last season. In the final, which lasted 49 minutes, the 19-year-old student played a spectacular touch game and gave his opponent few chances to use his best shot, the drop.
The four visiting Queensland women players fought out the women’s title.
The dominance of the Australians gave the local players no opportunity for placings in the semi-finals. The visitors’ squash was of a standard well worth watching.
