Six of Canterbury most promising juniors have received part sponsorship for the national under-age squash rackets championships at Napier this weekend. They are Rod Hayes, Paul McFadzien, Barry Matthews, Alan Corkin, Pip Monk (Christchurch) and Joanna Milne (Sumner). All should make a good showing but one of the best prospects is the 17 year-old Hayes who is expected to extend all the top senior players in Christchurch this season. Recently he won the Christchurch closed championships with an outstanding win the final over the experienced Vic Hargreaves. The Burnside club is also sending several players, of whom Stewart Davenport must be favourite to win the Under 13 section. Playing in the same age group last year in the nationals, he won all his games, 3-0, and in most cases conceded only two to three points a game.
