Why Squash Foundation?

The trustees enjoy the camaraderie from squash, and don’t want the history to be lost.

The Canterbury Squash Foundation Board members have played squash for many years. They have met many interesting characters and top players, and seen events over the years and are trying to record these before they are forgotten so they can be available for others to remember or learn about. If you are involved in squash in Canterbury then one day you too could be part of this history. In fact you already are!

Squash began in Canterbury in 1907.

The CSF website is intended to be a storage place for the history of squash in Canterbury, and the memories included on it will grow as time goes by. You can use the search function to seek out things related to your club or of interest to you.

Maintain and increase networks and engender camaraderie.

Most of the activities the CSF organise involve bringing squash players together in a way that lets them enjoy each others company, often away from a squash club. The golf tournament and the Legends dinner, now regular events, have been very popular with the participants. Squash, and indeed all sport, brings together people who have a similar interest and generally creates an environment where camaraderie and friendly (for the most part) rivalries develop. The Squash Club scene, particularly in the years before Saturday shopping and extended licensing hours, provided an environment where people gathered regularly and often socialised late into the night

Provide a forum where current players can stay connected with each other.

The CSF has a Facebook page as well as the website. The intent of this page is that squash players in Canterbury, or indeed from elsewhere, can keep in touch and share their exploits, experiences and thoughts about the events currently occurring around the squash clubs they visit. We welcome their input.

Provide support and encouragement to younger players.

The lifeblood of any activity is the young people who take it up and grow to love it. The CSF is very interested in helping encourage junior players into the game, and supporting or initiating events that enhance this One aim is to create opportunities for players of different age groups to mingle and share ideas and interests. The tuakana – teina principle is of high interest to the Foundation. (Older ones teaching the younger ones)

Provide Financial support to valid and worthy squash causes on a periodic basis.

The Foundation is not intended to be a funding organisation. However, it will consider supporting projects that lie outside the domain of Squash Canterbury. In past years the Foundation has provided financial assistance to three very promising Cantabrians and all three advanced their playing level markedly. Indeed Paul Coll (from the Greymouth Squash Club) is now amongst the top 5 players in the world. The CSF has also provided defibrillators to a number of clubs in the Canterbury region.

The Trustees of the Foundation are well known around squash venues in Christchurch and would welcome contact in person or via squash club members.
