Safwat who first went to England with his diploma father in 1962 to claim the Surrey Under 15 title, told me after the match “I was very lucky to win against Lilley, at 1-8 I had almost given up but once I got back the service I realised that there was still a chance”. The Egyptian who has to his credit a magnificent win over Geoff Hunt last season said he slowed down after the winning the first game thinking that be would easily subdue Lilley. “But the New Zealander surprised me with his consistency and spirited fight”. Murray Lilley, a real estate broker disclosed that he he lost about five pounds during the match. “It was terribly hot on the court I sweated from head to foot, feeling as if I was standing in the middle of a pool”. Lilley said “I tried my best but you know the last point is always the hardest point in the dame and it so proved today.” The 18 year-old amateur Atlas Khan, as I predicted yesterday, troubled the six times British Open champion Jonah Barrington in the first two games. He even led 6-4 and then levelled 7-7, but Jonah has the vital match winning experience.Atlas again led 2-0 in the following game and made Barrington work hard before surrendering at 4-9. Barrington then produced a volley of front wall smashes to clinch the game and the match 6-0. Unseeded Sajjad Muneer did well against top seed Geoff Hunt. Although Sajjad lost straight 2-9,5-9,4-9 but he made Hunt exert himself before entering the quarter-finals. Sajjad even led 4-0 in the third game but that was all he could do against his formidable opponent. Qamar Zeman dropped a game against Egyptian Asran before accomplishing a 7-9,9-1,9-0,9-1 victory. Zaman took time to settle down and during the course hit the board frequently but once the number three see got into strides it was all over very soon. Mohibullah too found Abdul Aziz of Egypt tough opponent although he won 9-1,9-7,9-1 the Egyptian never gave up till the last point. It took Mohibullah 57 minutes to clear the hurdle.Eleventh seed Yastin also moved to the quarter-fianls eliminating T Cheetham of Australia, while another Australian Cam Nancarrow, the fifth seed had an easy time against B Patterson of Great Britain. Safwat now meets Geoff Hunt in the quarter-finals schedules for Sunday Mohibullah faces Jonah Barrington, Alauddin clashes with Cam Nancarrow and Yasin takes on Qamar Zaman.
