In an almost unprecedented move, High School Old Boys II defaulted its A grade squash rackets game to its No.1 side last evening. Old Boys were with Graeme Bird, who is managing the New Zealand Colts side in Australia and it’s Barry McNeil who is in the North Island but did not take the usual step in calling on B grade players to make up the side.
Christchurch II and Christchurch III both had comfortable wins in their second round matches against Christchurch I and Sumner, respectively, leaving Christchurch II in the lead with 16 points. It is followed by Christchurch III and High School Old Boys I, 12 points, Christchurch I 10, High School Old Boys II 6, Burnside and Sumner 2.
The most absorbing match of the evening was that between the junior, Paul McFadzien (Christchurch II), and Roger Monk (Christchurch I). Every game, except the third which Monk won, went to advantage points and McFadzien eventually managed to scrape through.
McFadzien won the second game with a superb drop, shot – a feature of both players games – and only took the fourth after service changed the hands half a dozen times with the score remaining at 9-8 in McFadziens favour.
Laurie Wilson (Christchurch III) made an astounding recovery against John MacDougall and took the match in five games after losing the first two and being down 0-7 and then 3-8 in the third.
Rod Hayes (Christchurch I) looked back to his best after his rather disappointing straight sets loss to Viv Hargreaves last week. He had an easy win over Christchurch II’s top player, Mike Grant while another junior, Barry Matthews (Christchurch III), was in fine touch and conceded only 11 points to John Christensen (Sumner).
