Murray Lilley (New Zealand) and Londoner Barry O’Conner won a place in squash history at Wembley yesterday when they broke the world record for the longest competition squash match.
Lilley finally won the second round match of the British amateur championship 9-3, 10-8, 2-9, 7-9, 10-8, after two hours and 35 minutes on the court.
This was 19 minutes longer than the previous match. “I should not have Australia’s Cam Nancarrow and Jonah Barrington, of Britain, in South Africa earlier this year.
During the match Lilley received eight warnings for slow play – five of them in the deciding game – but was not penalised.
“Murray took too long to recover from lengthy rallies in the fifth game,” O’Connor said after the match. “I should to have allowed him to rest, but continued serving as I am entitled to do the rules.”
“My generosity taught me a lesson.”
The final game took 38 minutes, but the second was the longest at 58 minutes.
In the other second round games, Bruce Brownlee (N.Z.) beat J.Stockenberg (Sweden), 9-2, 9-1, 9-2, and C.Blackwood (N.Z.) beat R. Johnson (Britain, 6-9, 10-9, 2-9, 10-8, 9-7.
