Canterbury has beaten Southern Districts in their annual squash encounter at Timaru, and so retained the Viv Hargreaves Shield.
After the morning matches, Canterbury led by 19 rubbers to 17, thanks to good performances by its juniors and under 23 men’s teams and it increased its margin in the reverse matches to finish the winners over all by 41 to 31.
Although Canterbury’s top man, Rod Hayes, dropped a game in each of his matches, he appeared to have the measure of his opponents, Bob Foster and Ross Fitzsimmons, with his excellent control and court coverage.
Fitzsimmons had impressed in his first match when he accounted for the experienced Bryan Simpson in a sparkling match over four games.
Simpson suffered a knock on his elbow and had to default his second match.
Sound performance by Barrie Matthews and Craig Hibbert at No. 3 and No. 4 for Canterbury augers well for the representative team in later fixtures. They both overcame the experience of the wily veteran, Russell Grant, and the well performed Kevin Leary.
Robin Clements scored a good win over the Timaru professional, Danny Lyons, in a drawn out five-setter.
Southern’s women had the edge over Canterbury, with the nationally ranked Joanne Milne winning her matches convincingly. Kate Carpinter and Lorna Symes both won one match and showed a sound degree of fitness.
